Researchers at the Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Science and Technology (EMPA) are studying a seemingly odd occurrence in certain nanomaterials.  The team manipulated the shape and width of graphene-atom ribbons which in turn altered the material’s properties.  The width of the experimental nanoribbons, produces an electronic quantum state which may be used – possibly – as a component in quantum computers. He Put Quantum on Silicon  This man’s studies permit Intel to make “hundreds of thousands” of quantum system chips – that same 300-millimeter silicon wafer Intel advertised with “Intel inside” years ago. Much of the challenge to doing so was in the very nature of quantum mechanics. Qubits, the basic quantum computing-necessary particles, are extremely fragile requiring the utmost in sterile environments to function properly – sterile in every facet.
