Our smartphones are a treasure trove of personal information, making our handsets not just a useful device, but also a valuable source of data. According to Intertrust, the average smartphone user spends nearly 5 hours a day using apps, so it’s no wonder that we feel lost without our phones!
While most smartphone users are aware that their data could be exposed if their device is lost or stolen, they are probably less aware of the vulnerabilities that are inherent in many popular mobile apps. In 2020, Intertrust found that 83% of apps have at least one security flaw, often due to poor security protocols in the app. Highly effective data security has not always been a top priority for app developers, but as data protection regulation becomes more stringent, and the impact of data breaches at some of the world’s most popular apps is more widely reported, it is clear that app customers are increasingly concerned about the security and privacy of their data.

Counterpoint Research predicts that 38% of smartphones sold in 2021 will have embedded security hardware.

ID Quantique and SK Telecom recently announced the launch of the second QRNG-powered 5G smartphone, the Samsung Galaxy Quantum2, which features an embedded Quantis quantum random number generator (QRNG) chipset measuring just 2.5mm by 2.5mm. The QRNG chip adds an additional layer of authentication, boosting security by generating truly unpredictable and random numbers that are used for encryption.
This provides smartphone users with a differentiated smartphone service that enables them to use applications and services more securely.
The native integration of the QRNG chip into the Android Keystore (APIs) automatically enhances the security of a large number of services used on the smartphone, including mobile payments, banking and identification services, as well as communication and even music streaming services. All application developers can access the quantum security features for their services with the SDK, making enhanced security more accessible and easier to implement.
With all of our personal data contained in our smartphones – which are themselves connected to almost everything in our lives –it’s little wonder that security is set to be a major selling point for smartphones and apps. Embedded security hardware offers OEMs and Mobile Network Providers the opportunity to offer the highest level of assurance via a method that is also highly convenient for customers. With the affordable QRNG chip installed in phones, telcos are not only able to differentiate their products and services but can also enjoy additional revenues from customers who are prepared to pay for enhanced security for their personal data and privacy.
