Fermilab launches new institute for quantum science
The nation’s premier particle physics laboratory has become a major player in the rapidly expanding field of quantum science and technology. Today the U.S. Department of Energy’s Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory announced the launch of the Fermilab Quantum Institute, which will bring all of the lab’s quantum science projects under one umbrella. This new enterprise signals Fermilab’s commitment to this burgeoning field, working alongside scientific institutions and industry partners from around the world. TACC Announces Results of Top500 List, First Large-Scale Science Runs, Fellowships at SC19
Nov. 18, 2019 — The Frontera supercomputer at the Texas Advanced Computing Center (TACC) earned the #5 ranking on the November 2019 Top500 list, with 23.5 petaflops of performance on the High Performance LINPACK (HPL) benchmark, and was again named the most powerful university system in the world.

Test gets quantum computers to check their own work
A new test checks if quantum computers are giving correct answers to questions beyond the scope of traditional computing. It could help make the first quantum computer that can outperform a classical computer a reality. By creating a protocol that allows a quantum computer to check its own answers to difficult problems, the scientists from the University of Warwick have provided a means to confirm that a quantum computer is working correctly without excessive use of resources. The researchers have developed a protocol to quantify the effects of noise on the outputs of quantum computers.
